Any alternatives to BT???

Are there any alternatives to BT for landline rental or do they still have the monopoly? We are moving house and I just phoned BT to cancel current phone line and had to wait 15 minutes to speak to a robot. Then got transferred as I was told if I want a BT line in the new place it would be a 12 month contract with a 'penalty clause' if we leave BT before that time. I was transferred to another BT robot but after another 15 minutes, just as I was about to be connected the line mysteriously cut off. I HATE BT
In our current flat we got Homechoice products (cable tv, internet and cut price phone calls) but we still had to have a BT line. What I want to know is whether there is a company that you can actually get a telephone number/landline from without having to go through BT in any way (and that is better than BT or at least not as annoying)???
Thanks in advance.

BT no longer have a monopoly, my advice would be to call other providers to see if they'll install a line for you (they now all have the same rights as BT to install lines for consumers).0

Without going into the whole "It's not a good idea to pay line rental to anyone other than BT because of the restrictions (on how you route your calls) that result" and the "Any of the line providers now in the market could connect/reconnect a line - but most won't do so" discussion again, dawney10 posted THIS a while ago.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
