Inheritance

I currently live with my elderly mother in a council flat. She has mobility issues, so I act as her carer, although I do not claim carers allowance as I work part time.
Currently the rent and council tax is covered by moms benefits, has she receives pension credit as well as attendance allowance.
I am due to receive an inheritance shortly and wondered if I need to start budgeting to pay for the rent and council tax or will those continue to be paid from moms entitlement.

  • you can work and claim CA as long as you earn less than £102 week after certain deductions
how much inheritance?enough to enable you to contribute?
  • If she gets Attendance Allowance your income won't reduce her HB or CTAX
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

What the OP seems to be asking is will their capital assets base increasing(inheritance) going to effect the situation.

I guess the back question is what happens when a household(of say 2 people) that may not qualify for benefits changes to one that would if it was one party with a live in carer, but fails if they are still considered a household as it is still the original persons.

The Mother gets attendance Allowance so no - the sons inheritance or increase in income will not change the situation. The son's income and savings are disregarded. He could be a multi millionaire and earn £1 million per week and the Mother's benefits would not stop or change as there is no non dependant deductions if the claimant receives Attendance Allowance.
