Dishwasher - luxury or necessity?

  • There was a dishwasher in this house when we bought it, but it's broken now and we don't miss it. There's only 2 of us and DH does more than his share. However, my daughter has 3 children and an (otherwise sweet) husband who refuses to wash dishes. It is possible that the dishwasher saved her marriage. I've known several couples swerve right past the "take your turn to wash the dishes or it's D-I--V-O-R-C-E" problem with the purchase of a dishwasher.

My partner has washed up once I think in 10 years we've been together, apart from the once when we were on holiday he did 2 breakfast dishes, it was about the third time I was in hospital and he ran out of plates, other times I came home it was all waiting for me. I have a DARN good case for seperation (not married) or getting a dishwasher........been googling it trying to see how we could fit one for the last 20 minutes, no joy :(
One day I might be more organised...........

I managed for many years without one, but now I've got it, I wouldn't be without it. If you're working, running and home and have children, then a dishwasher is a necessity, not a luxury. Your time and physical energy are limited. Save them for the important things in your family life. And things will be cleaner. Cups will lose their built-in tea and coffee stains, and glasses will be sparkling.

I had to pay a carpenter to adapt a cupboard to get my dw (slimline) in and I consider it the best money ever spent. My only regret is that I could not have a full size one as the slimline can get filled up v. quickly and larger pots and pans are too cumbersome for it.

  • I love my dishwasher too. Used to come home after work at 10pm and find loads of dishes in the sink. Have now mostly trained OH to put them in the dishwasher. I wish I'd had room for a bigger one as the slimline ones soon fill up. I think they're a necessity, especially for working Mums.
  • Wow, never expected this response - thank you all! My husband I think is also quite looking forward to it he's spent the last hour looking on the internet at how to plumb it in!

Unfortunately will have to lose a cupboard but this cupboard only takes overflow of tins - so can go in garage. I'm hoping my stress levels will reduce - i'm already feeling more relaxed!:T

Four months ago i would have said luxury. Now that i have a 13 week old baby, and no longer know my a*se from my elbow, i would say necessity :rotfl:
I load 'the magic cupboard' before i go to bed, and the lovely pixies wash and dry everything. Bless them!!!

I coped without one with two children up until middle of last year. My theory was if you dont own so many dishes then you wont have as many to wash up - Lol daft I know but it worked for me.

Now with my dishwasher I have to admit it is a luxury to own.

i have one although i dont use it very often, probably once maybe twice a week, i only use it if it can filled right up. and remember you dont have to buy the really expensive detergents, own brands work just as well(sometimes better):T and it is a definate must at christmas!!!

  • Had one for a little while and then lived without one for 6 months. Nightmare. I really would have to be wearing sackcloth and eating gruel before I did without one again.

Oh, and a top tip for all you motorcyclists, if you have a helmet with a non-removable lining and it gets a bit … whiffy… over the summer months (not this year obviously) just run you lid through the dishwasher on a moderate i.e. not too hot, setting, it’ll come out like new.
