Yes, you can put in a claim for ESA if you get a fit note from your doctor. They will assess you for contribution based ESA first and then income based ESA. If you are eligible for ESA and you are found fit for work after the work capability assessment then you do not have to pay back the money but the ESA will stop and you will have to claim JSA whilst you make a mandatory reconsideration (for them to look at the decision again). When they have looked at the decision again then you can choose to go to appeal (if you want to) and you can then go back on ESA.

During all these times when you have been found fit for work /waiting for an appeal you will be paid the assessment rate which is the same amount of money as JSA.

In addition - personal independance payment may be possible to claim.
Is the disability such that it causes you problems getting around - or problems with day-day tasks that would mean you couldn't complete them properly in under twice the time most days/
