Wash hand basin plug stuck

It's one of these systems where you push a knob behind the taps up or down to engage or release the plug via a vertical then horizontal rod that goes into the drainpipe mechanism. The linkage between the two rods is OK but the movement is not being transmitted through to the plug itself leaving me with a basin full of dirty water. Any ideas or suggestions welcome.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi
First sponge out the water , then you might be able to get a very thin blade (like a stanley knife ) between the plug and the 'hole' . You have probably lost the long adjustment bolt from the plug (it will be sitting in the trap underneath)
If all fails then you will need to take this trap off and push it up from below.

Thanks Canucklehead, the Stanley blade did the trick and got it out. The bolt had not come off but had just somehow got underneath the lifting rod. Had to use force to get it past there but OK now.0
