lath and plaster

Under the stairs we have a lath and plaster sloping ceiling which is about 3 x 4 foot ( http://s18.postimg.org/h35bu6pjt/IMG_8223.jpg ). How much of a dirty/dusty job is it going to be to remove the lath and plaster - or is just best to just overboard it?

Removing L&P ceiling is just about the most filthy thing you can do in a house along with any use of an angle grinder. Over board it if you can.

Taking down an upstairs lath and plaster ceiling must be the worse job in DIY history. Think- sticking head in a bucket of soot.
But yours is a much more limited area and its just the stairs.
    I would remove...........very carefully,

Removing lathe & plaster is a very messy job. Is the ceiling plaster actually coming away from the lathes or is it just cracked? If it's not coming away, I would probably either skim it or simply repair the cracks with filler.

    But its not a ceiling.
  • Overboarding is a bit of a bodge hides things well? Doesn’t identify problems eg lathes etc are falling down, cracked etc How much mess depends on how much accumulated dust, debris etc has gone between floor boards. Stairs ceilings tend etc to get more than walls if there space above? If it cant be filled repaired etc remove and reboard

Only 4' x 3' - get a dust mask and eye protection and get rid.
    Forgotten but not gone.

Yes it will make a big mess, even that small sized area but at least once its out, its out and it can be done properly. If it were me I'd rip the whole cupboard out, not just the ceiling part, the walls too, they look like they have the same old white wash paint on too, so you'll never paint them to a good finish.
