Tesco criteria for employing staff

When the new minimum wage comes in next year at £7.20 for over 25's, am I right in thinking employers will only ever employ teenagers to fill unskilled vacancies so that they can get them for cheaper?
Is there any rules in place to stop this happening?
Discrimination in employment on the grounds of age is unlawful. However proof may not be easy to come by.0 -
OP I used to work for Tesco 10 years ago.
I've been in my current job for the last decade (elsewhere) and considered a return to the company so I could be closer to home and work my way up the ranks.
I applied for a position earlier on in the year and it took them two months to tell me I'd been unsuccessful; this was around the time they'd announced job losses etc.
I'd hazard a guess and say you'd be 'overqualified' (even though they're having to repost the vacancies!)It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Three reasons:
You're not cheap - paying an 16-21 year old the minimum wage for that age saves money, and they know there will always be an influx of cheap workers looking for a bit of extra money the side of college/Uni.
You have potential to move on quickly (couple this with the above point), meaning a retailer who gets an application from someone in a certain age bracket with considerable experience elsewhere is looking for something to tide them over until something better comes up. You'll be bored because you don't really have to think much about the job and probably be off in 3-6 months (even if you actually want to stay long-term, they will assume you won't, no if's, no buts.)
That "test" on the application form is ridiculous, what seems logical to you might not be logical in the companies eyes, its seems more like a lottery based on (hopefully) picking the correct answers, when I applied for Asda originally, someone managed to get the best answers for me to put down on it to make sure I'd passed the points scoring system.Professional Data Monkey

Have you an Aldi near you - they are extensively recruiting up here as they are opening so many new stores over the next couple of years - pay way above the living wage too!!0
