Tesco criteria for employing staff

Options
I have over 20 years retail experience, 4 of which at management level, and I can't even get a job stacking shelves at Tesco. What is more annoying is the jobs I am turned down for are then re-advertised.

I see staff at my local store who don't have a clue what they are doing and it makes me wonder how they got a job when I am being turned down.

Just what are the criteria Tesco use to employ staff?

Maybe young and cheap are the 2 major criteria?

Have you asked for feedback? It does sound like you're massively over qualified.

Why not apply for management roles or supervisory roles ?
  • I have the experience. The only qualifications I have are those I left secondary school with years ago. I guess cheap labour wins over experience as far as Tesco is concerned.
  • I have applied for various roles, including management, and been turned down for them all

It's possible that your CV isn't ticking the boxes for potential employers if you aren't even getting interviews at any level.

Tesco seem to use a points based system to grade applicants and interviewees.... However there isnt much info on the net about it. If you search there are a few threads on netmums and thestudentroom which also gives you some idea of the majority of applicants.

If you are not ticking the right boxes for 'normal' applications then your other chance would be to be taken in as extra christmas staff and then work hard and hope to be kept on after christmas...or at least be familiar to the staff next time you apply.

Plenty of headlines atm about tesco cutting 10000 jobs...so they may be filling jobs internally trying to minimise redundancies.

I am frequently in a very small tesco...so small that a lot of the staff training signage and posters are actually behind the tills. They seem to be very focussed on middle managment, pointless staff meetings (iirc they have a daily cycle of meetings including 'the moment of clarity', 'the daily rumble' etc). If you are applying on the basis thats it is a nice simple job stacking shelves then this could be your problem as they seem to have a very high opinion of themselves. Presumably if they werent quite such an arrogant company they wouldnt be in the position they are now.

Either way. Xmas seems a long way away but i would expect firms to be advertising soon. Dont restrict yourself to tesco and once you get some relevant recent retail experience under your belt i'm sure you will find your job search easier.

FYI, the daily rumble isn't a meeting - it's when the staff go round the store in the afternoon before the evening trade starts to tidy the shop - make sure products are in the right place, stuff is on the shelves, store is clean etc. So not a management meeting.
  • It's not just Tesco. It seems the young cheap labour theory applies to Asda too. My niece and I applied for the same job at the same Asda store. My application was turned down but my niece got an interview and was just informed yesterday that she got the job. She has only just finished University and has absolutely no retail experience or job experience. Asda will have to spend time and effort to train her up for the role. In 12 months she will leave because she has plans, which means Asda will then have to re-advertise, interview and train up someone else. They could have had someone with experience who intended staying with them.
