My mother had a laptop which has recently given up the ghost, we were looking at getting her a new one, but should we go laptop or tablet? Am thinking if we go down the tablet root, she'll need one with a keyboard?
any advice greatly appreciated

What's wrong with her laptop?0

We'd really need to know what she would use it for.
They are two completely different animals, each with pros & cons.0 -
Laptop was old, becoming slower and slower and after the latest trip to the tech repair, they said it would be better to upgrade it. She would just use it for general internet browsing/shopping/emails etc, no major downloading or streaming

My father in law had exactly the same issues
With a lot of help from Nifyt, 'we' restored it to former glories for the great expense of around 15 quid for some more memory.
First of all he will want to know the *full* make and model number.
It will need quite a bit of your time but will save your mum around 200 (?) quid which of course she will leave to you eventually!!!0 -
Ha! Not sure I quite agree with the mercenary reasoning, but agree with JB (and NiftyDigits - I suspect that's where they were heading with their post) that it is probably worth salvaging. I also suspect that it would be quite easy to do, and for little expense.0

Thanks
So let's begin with the brand name and full model number, to see if a cheap fix is worthwhile.0 -
Thanks all. We have left it in for repair and a good clear out of redundant data a few times now in order to try and save money ,but the time between repairs is now becoming shorter and each visit costs between £30-50.
we were discussing this earlier and she seems to think she's had it for about 7 years so I think she's due a new one.Savings: £2 Jar: £804/£1000

Brand name and full model number? There was likely no need to pay in the first place.0 -

I know Nifty could help sort you out but here's a quick alternative.
If the laptop has an XP sticker on it, tradeitin for £150 and buy a new laptop with 3 years warranty for about £115 (after tradeins, cashback). Has to be bought before end July.

If she wants to toy with a tablet then you should try a hybrid. For her usage there is no need for an ultrabook price point.0
