hello,
I am after a piece of (free) software that allows file transfers across a network, without setting up file and print sharing. pref free, and pref as lightweight as possible. to transfer files from pc a to pc b. so a sort of server.exe that can be run on the client at will, and then something to be run on the other pc to connect or map a drive to the other pc. It also needs to be able to run on 98 as well as XP. Laplink sort of thing, but if possible to appear as a mapped drive, but that isn't essential
msofts file + print sharing is not possible in my setup, so am looking for an alternative if anyone knows of one.
Thankyou for reading, hoping you techies know of something to do this.

As default hard drives are shared anyway with windows browse to \\computername\c$
Another option would be to use vnc, ultraVNC has a file transfer option in there it requires server software to be installed on the pc but it can be hidden from the user if you wish with service mode in 2k/xp I have used real vnc on 98, im sure ultra will work on it also and its free.0 -
Another VNC alternative is TeamViewer:

I wanted to do the same thing and more (such as Remote Desktop Control, File Transfer etc.) and this is an absolute dream to set up. You don't have to worry about Firewalls, Port Forwarding etc. with this.
It can be set up as a Windows Service or as a normally run program. Password protection, encrypted data transfer and even includes a chat facility.
Free usage is limited to 25 hours a month, however, so you need to have an idea of how long you're likely to require a connection for
