Bank reclaim money

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this.

Last year I asked my gym to close my membership over email. They told me I needed to come in and fill in a form, but I wasn't able to because I wasn't in the area at the time. After several emails they told me to give them a ring which I did. I was told I could send in a signed letter stating my wish to close my membership and give them 30 days notice. I did this and thought that would be the matter closed.
Earlier this year I found out that money was still being taken from my bank account. I contacted them and they refused to even acknowledge I requested to close the membership. They said they wouldn't give me a refund but would accept my 30 days notice from when I contacted them again. After various emails back and forth, getting nowhere, they closed my membership. Now they did this all over email, which suspiciously they said they couldn't do last year.

Would I have any luck going to my bank to try and get them to reclaim the money that was taken from me when the membership should have been closed? I'm pretty sure it was a direct debit that was set up for it, isn't there some sort of guarantee with this?

Thanks for any help

You could reclaim it via the DD guarantee, yes.

But I imagine they will just say there wasn't a written cancellation and that will be that.

You can try, but don't expect much.

At which point, if any, did you cancel the DD with your bank?
