Hi
My son has a Acer Aspire E14 Touch running on Windows 8, he has tried to load a new game on to the laptop through the disc drive. The disc drive is making the correct noise and the disc is spinning however it isnt loading he had the same problem with loading dvd's and my local computer store put VLC on the laptop which solved the problem however this is the first game he has played on the laptop and we cannot get it load
Any ideas/help please
Thanks

Try going into 'This PC' and double clicking the icon of the dvd drive (or right-click the drive icon and the option should be there to run or play(if I recall)).0

Easiest checks first.
Do other DVDs work in the drive? If the others work, then the problem is often that DVD. However on sometimes head tolerance alignment is on the borderline, and if the disk is also on the edge.
Boot into linux of a DVD - or use a usb stick and browse the cd and also try other DVD too.
If the DVD drive is working within system manager, then I would probably replace the DVD drive. In the past I tried cleaners, but they never seemed to work for me and by the time you order one and pay P&P, you are on your way to the cost of a new drive.
You can get new usb rw drives on ebay for under £10. People are using DVD less, so this may be an option, but over time, these laptop drives always seem to fail more.0 -
there was/is a MS Fixit to reset the buffers on dvd drives...

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

VLC is simply software to play a DVD, there is no software built in to Windows 8 to play DVD by default, you (or the maker) had to buy the MediaCentre add on.
If a film can be played by VLC from a DVD drive without issue it suggests an installer or disk error not the drive hardware.0
