I'm a terrible person and in awe of you all. I want things, pricey things too! I just can't help myself. For my birthday this year we went to see shrek the musical tickets were about £50 each plus I had gifts to open too. If I hadn't I'd probably have thrown a strop, stems from being a spoiled only child and the only granddaughter to boot.

    Why are you terrible?

If you want things and can afford it, then why not have them!

We tend not to buy each other very much at birthdays or Christmas, but we'd have a splurge in the post-Christmas sales, or otherwise put present money by, so we can carry on going on cruises. I've spent two birthdays on board ship, including this years birthday. I bought a posh bag while I was on the cruise, as a 'birthday present', but I'd have bought it anyway, even if it hadn't been my birthday!

I should add that the bag was cheaper than it was at home, and I get a loyalty discount of 10% for all my onboard spending, so the ship is a good place to buy treats - I get my perfume when I'm onboard too.

When I was married I used to get expensive but thoughtless gifts from the OH. You know - gadgets that he liked and assumed I would? Or money.
Latterly I decided to make my birthdays special by myself. Each year I try to experience something I never did before, depending on finances. So one year I booked a flotation tank (loved it surprisingly) and another year I tried some chilli chocolate (NOT for me) but just taking the time to do something different reminded me that we're supposed to grow older , not wither away!.
I still try to do something different when possible - tried threading one year. Not pleasant but it was different and added something to my routine rather than doing the same old, year in, year out.
It's your birthday - you do whatever you want to do.
    Looking ahead

That's a great way to celebrate, I like your motto of growing older, not withering away  life's too short to be unhappy!

    At my age, gratefully. :)
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)
  • I don't really celebrate birthdays as such - too many of them behind me already. But if a friend is visiting, normally a lunch somewhere...and small pressies only - in a habit of issuing wee "couple of things that I need/want" lists to each other with items valued from free to maybe £15 that we can pick from - and that away you get what you wanted for birthday. :)

:D I went with a big gang one birthday to play one of those shoot 'em up laser wargames in a blacked-out warehouse. It was brilliant fun and utterly joyous to hear grown men and women laughing as uninhibitedly as small children.

I hate fuss and hate being the centre of attention, so a party where it was all about me would be my idea of hell, much more enjoyable to be out doing something a bit madcap with a group of pals.

Am I alone in not ever wanting presents for birthdays (or for Christmas for that matter). Not that I care really!

    I'm the same. :)

    I don't bother.

I have always been disappointed cannot remember a good birthday. I used to be full of expectations now I find it easier to not expect anything.
My ex used to huff and rush around the night before, one year he forgot until my mum called to wish me happy birthday but i had already gone out as i was taking my kids to school/nursery i came back and he shouted down the stairs "your cards are on the worktop" they went in the bin...The last 2 years my mum has been in Australia, got a text from her on my birthday telling my what a wonderful time she is having and how she is being spoilt by her new fella no mention of my birthday. On my 21st she had the hump with me cannot remember now why? she ended up throwing my present on my bed and walked off.
well next Feb i will be 50...on that night its daughters parents' evening so that's what i will be doing :rotfl:
