WFTC, CTC and being self employed

Hi. My husband intends to start up a small business (he currently is a student as I am, and drives buses 16 hours per week) but was concerned about claiming WFTC and CTC and how it works with being elf employed. I tried calling them and they said that this years payments are based on last years and he can earn up to a certain amount before they stop the credits. Now, I dont want to be stuck in a mess again as I was overpaid a few years ago and had to pay it all back. The lady then said that the system is changing again in April. I dont know when to declare or what to declare as he is only just setting up. It is also very difficult to predict how much he will be earning until it is all up and running. Any recommendations and not sure if this makes any sense!
