Memories ,,,,,,,,,,,,

Options
I am upgrading my box from a h81 chipset to a z97 chipset , I am only using 1 x 4g of memory at the moment (1600) , however I have a use for this , the handbook lists the following

Supports DDR3 3100+(OC)/2933(OC)/2800(OC)/2400(OC)/
2133(OC)/ 1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered

I am going to continue using my i3-4170 and geforce gtx 750Ti

will there be any advantage in buying 1866 or even 2133 memory , or is this a waste of money I do NOT overclock at all

Generally its better not to mix memory, in theory mixed speed memory will drop to the lowest speed, but it can add to complexity if there are issues later on.

Depending on what the world memory chip makers are making the most of it may be cheaper to buy faster memory, but as it will all drop to the lowest speed there is little point paying a premium.

That said you may get a better system selling you current memory and buying the fastest it can take, but its probably not something you would notice in day to day use.

If you dont overclock the memory, then it'll run at 1600, even if its rated at 2133.

and even if you do push the speed of the memory up, it wont make much of a difference unless you also increase the base clock of the motherboard/cpu.

when overclocking is a good idea to match the memory and motherboard speeds. So if you increase the motherboard, it helps to have faster ram to match

the idea was not to mix memory , but to use the old stick for another job , as in "I have a use for it" , and to buy replacement memory .

Cycrow , thanks for a simple , and sensible answer ,

    cheers

Sorry as you had listed 1600 it wasn't clear you had a separate use for it.

Buy the best you can afford.
