Ripped off by Npower
Can anyone give any suggestions?
I run a very small business and signed up for a 2 year electricity contract with Npower. At the beginning of June this year I got a letter from them to say that our contract expired on June 20 and upon checking the new rates for electricity supply they had almost doubled in price. I telephoned them to say that I didn't want to renew the contract as I could get a much cheaper rate elsewhere but I was told that it was just tough, I should have given the required 90 day notice and that I was stuck with them for another 12 months. They said that it was not up to them to remind me of the cancellation period, even though they had not told me of the new rates until they new that it was impossible for me to cancel!
It seems that domestic users are protected by laws but business users, no matter how small are sitting ducks for large rip off corporations like Npower.
Alan.

Yup businesses have very little protection I'm afraid. This practise isn't restricted to nPower, there have been complaints of similar practices from other companies as well. Unfortunately it is all in the small print, the moral of the story is to read it and not get caught out again!0

Got to agree with above - I deal with this sort of thing all the time - the majority of electricity & gas suppliers require 90 days termination - except for powergen who have this strange termination clause where you can't terminate until they've issued a renewal price.........0
