we have decided to leave the issue with the door, and when his 6 months is coming up, look for somewhere else... the door isnt the only issue with the estate agent.
They told us the flat was on pay as you go electric meter, only when the keys were handed over, the estate agent couldnt find the key meter. it turns out, it is billed every 3 months, not pay as you go. So we have had to change it over and they can't do it until september. She also told us he could have a pet;, now they are saying it will cost £100 but they are not really that keen on pets being in the property anyway. And yes, it was advertised as "pets at descretion". The microwave, fridge, and washing machine was a good will gesture by the owner, so he can take them with him when he moves. But, the microwave hasn't been cleaned since god know when, and is full of rust, fridge is good, but washing machine doesnt work. Also, there are birds nesting in the roof space keeping him awake at night, but this will be sorted when cavity wall insulation is put in in August.. So, we think he is best of finding somewhere else....

What does your stepson think? I'm assuming he's old enough to look after himself, so these are things that he should be doing for himself I would say.

For the future ... rent on the basis of current condition ... not based on the empty words of the letting agent at the time.
