I have never bought a bike that doesnt need a good service in the first few weeks. Wheels being the worst.

Good luck, sounds like a dud. Id be interested to know which bike shop as my impression of the types that have head offices is pretty bad.

I was being slightly facetious regarding tools ;)

The inspection of the bike didn't set off any immediate alarm bells but as explained in the first post, the issues started soon after purchase. The first issue was noise from the headset which turned down to the bearing not being greased properly, if at all, when the bike was setup. Other issues on the bike bring into question the durability of components.

I could very well give the middle finger to the shop and then try to sort out the issues myself but on a bike with a groupset which is worth around £500, I could be leaving myself even more out of pocket in the long run.

Unlike cars, all bike moving parts are exposed to the elements and the things need constant maintenance, which is part of the fun of bike ownership. Maintaining your own bike will save you a lot of money in the long run, so this would seem a good starting point to get stuck in, although I would get a wheel builder to either rebuild your machine built wheels, or even better build you a new set using better rims and / hubs.
  • Seems you know 7/8th of FA about bikes.

Does the fact it's clearly stated to be a road bike not assist you at all?

Nice to see you have given the guy some constructive advice, or maybe not.
you can still use a mountain bike on a road, does not have to be a conventional frame or wheels to be a road bike.

Apologies for not replying for so long.

The bike shop in question is LeisureLakes Bikes.
  • The bike shop agreed to see to the issues in another branch. They carried out the work free of charge and that included replacing a couple of items which was great. They were very helpful tbh and even offered to carry out a free 6 week check up for added peace of mind.

The bike felt fantastic to ride and I was really pleased. It seemed perfect timing too as I was going to France within days of getting the bike back and it meant I could do some riding on holiday too. Imagine my surprise when the chain popped off the chainring for no apparent reason and me taking a tumble in the process. I grazed my arm and there was some very minor superficial damage to the bike and bar tape so pretty lucky no serious damage to myself or the bike. Anyway, the chain fell off a couple more times on holiday, thankfully without any other incidents.

I arranged to have the 6 week check up not long after getting home as I had concerns about the rear mech hanger not being realligned when the shop was carrying out repairs. It was on the list of things that needed to be done so I was a bit peeved that it hadn't been done. The attitude from the guys in the shop this time was markedly different. One guy said that we've done this a that for you already and the free 6 week check up shouldn't really apply. I was a bit stunned as the shop is over an hour's drive from home and I'd only made the journey to take up the offer which they presented to me on my previous visit. I had also phoned them to confirm a time to bring the bike in. Then when I expressed my concern that the rear mech hanger hadn't been fixed on the last visit and as a result, it caused me to come off the bike, I was basically called a liar. He saw the scrape mark on the bar tape and a couple of scratches on the rear derailleur and said that I had a crashed and caused the rear mech hanger to bend. I couldn't believe my ears. I had documented the issue with the rear mech hanger before visiting the store for the first time. I decided not to make a massive fuss of it and left the bike with them for the check up.

I went back a couple of hours later and they demanded £10 of me as they straightened the hanger. I was a little surprised at being asked to pay for something that they should've put right for free on my previous visit. I tried to stand my ground by saying that if they had put it right when they were supposed to, I wouldn't have come off the bike and it wouldn't need straightening now. I wasn't particularly bothered about the £10, to me, it was the principle of the matter and how they were talking to me.

In the end, I paid the money. Took my bike and thanked them for their time.

Since having the rear mech hanger sorted, the chain hasn't fallen off a single time which just grates even more as if they had done it when they were supposed to, I'd be £10 richer :)

I haven't bothered contacting head office again. I seriously can't be arsed to deal with them any more. I was just amazed at the difference in attitude from the second shop from my first and second visits. Even though I expressed concern about the work, or lack of from my first visit, I wasn't cocky, lairy or rude, just pointed out that I wasn't happy with that aspect. I even said that besides that one thing, I thought the bike was amazing to ride and was really pleased on the whole.

Anyway...just wanted to update the thread :)
