  • Now wait a minute:

Virgin trains were at fault, because they undertook to send a FAX to the station to allow duplicate tickets to be issued, but failed to send it in time. On that basis (and that basis only), the OP has a valid complaint against them.
still waiting for a response on this from Virgin ! wrote to the customer services address again asking for proof the fax was sent , recieved an acknowledgement of receipt two weeks ago but no response as yet.
Also to date , no refund has been received on credit card as promised in first letter. No tickets for complimentary journey have been received either despite booking it on the 16th August when I received the letter. Phoned customer services today , took me half an hour of constant redialling to get a ringing tone then queue for 10mins , then the lady I spoke to asked if she could phone me back when she had spoken to her manager (she said 10-15mins) - still waiting!
I can not help but think all this is engineered to prevent people following through with valid complaints ? If they do eventually prove they did send the fax on time , then it will be far too late in the day to get any compensation from South west trains for this fiasco.

UK is not a big country - yet the train service seems to be in shambles here! The train fares are excessive and after this OP suffered quite a lot. I personally find bus and plane are always cheaper than train :)

And strike has become a mockery here! Tube, Firefighters, Royal Mail everyone started strike. Why? Don't like the pay - then find a different one :(

The main problem with UK that none of the systems are designed properly to handle "errors". If everything works fine you'll have a perfect system. One minor thing goes slightly out of track and you'll have a mayhem.

    A question to OP:
Why did you have to get the ticket by post? Did you not have the option to print out the e-ticket yourself? Sorry, I've not been to trains for a very long time - so don't know the latest rules.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Virgin only offer the e-ticket service for certain boarding stations, Southampton is not one of them. My complaint letter also asks them why this facility is not available , particularly as a back up measure when you phone to say your tickets have not arrived in the post!
I am still waiting for that call back!:rotfl:

  • OOPS! - Sorry , 1000miles in a week , 250miles from southampton to preston and then back same day = 500miles on the monday and again on the thursday.
thanks for pointing this out - said it was still affecting me all that driving ;)

Surely the fax would've arrived by the Thursday so that your daughter could travel back, saving you and your mum half of a nightmare week.

daughter would have been in preston and fax in southampton , tickets would have been issued from southampton - how would we have got them to her?

  • I'm sure they have fax machines in Preston - technology has got further than the Watford Gap you know!
  • If you paid by credit card you should take this up with your credit card company and get them to fight this on your behalf. at the end of the day, virgin took your money and didn't provide anything. Phone your credit card company and raise a dispute.
