How does your supermarket sort the bill
The question is prompted by the being on holiday in France I paid for quite a large grocery shop at Carrefour a large supermarket. My better half normally does the "big shop" at home and I rarely see the bill.
So this long bill from Carrefour was (to my eye) a confusing mess.
It was not in Alphabetic order
It did not appear to group similar product types together
There was only two sub totals Alimentaire and Beaute/sante/hygiene
It was not in the order of scanning.
It was not in price order.
Was it in a coded supplier order, profit margin order..........who knows, but not obviously the consumer
So any people conected to the industry explain wether the bill is an aid to confusion or a help.
I live in Luxembourg and can not speak to how the Supermakets there sort their bills as I have only today thought about this issue. I will be checking when I get back home but that is some weeks away.
So how do UK Supermarkets sort their bills, are they a help or a hinderence to the Consumer.

There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

It seems to be in the order that the items are scanned.
If, like me, you like to split your spending into categories, you can attempt to influence this by, for example, putting all alcohol, personal care or household items together. However, a good checkout operative can always "randomise" these again for you.If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

It's done in the order they are scanned, there's no order eg alphabetically.0

Carrefour in Morocco groups the items by department, e.g. personal hygiene, alcohol etc. Within the groups they are the order of scanning.
I saw something similar in one of the Danish supermarkets, but cannot remember which one.
Everywhere in the UK just shows the items in the order they were scanned, which is much more logical IMO as I know which order they were put through.0 -
Why would you need the bill to be sorted in order ? I shop at Aldi, i always check my bill before i start to pack my stuff. It takes seconds to check it to make sure i've not been overcharged, i don't need the items to be in order to do that, i can't really see the point of your post.0

Every UK supermarket seems to just be in order of scanning.0

Lidl always changes the order on the receipt, I find it a pain sometimes as sometimes when my mum has a voucher when you spend £40 we put our shopping together and then split the money we had off. its harder then to say the top half is mine and the bottom is hers, we actually have to sit down and work it out.0

Online supermarket bills group items by type but there is usually no obvious order within each group.
Tesco: fridge, freezer, cupboard
ASDA: Groceries, Health & Beauty & Household, Chilled, Frozen, Bakery, Other (e.g. toilet tissue. fresh fruit & veg), Securely Delivered Items (e.g. Weedkiller, compost)
Ocado: Fridge, Cupboard, Freezer. Items within each group are in subgroups of Use-By date ranges.0 -
Meer53, thank you
alang, thanks for that.
Thanks also to everyone else.
However in this tech age I would have thought that it would be very easy for one of the Supermarkets to sort and sub total category's and call it a positive for shopping with them. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -

I don't know about supermarkets, but in the store I work all transactions happen on the server not the till. It may only take a split second to sort and group the items but that would put extra strain on the servers.
I hardly think it would be worth it just to get something I have only ever heard one person mention.
It may happen one day, but only if the software writers can do it without it slowing the servers/software down and then persuade the supermarkets to pay for an upgrade that nobody has wanted.0 -
If you want your goods in alphabetical order then this is how you should put them on the conveyor. Why not use the self scan instead?0
