scorch mark in dishwasher

Ran the dishwasher the other day and when unloading it found black marks which looks like burn or scorch marks to me on one small area of the cutlery basket and on a adjacent spoon and knife.
Is this at all possible or could there be some other explanation for what such marks could appear? Thanks

Where's the heater element?
Some had an exposed element at the bottom of the machine - knife drops down, touches element conducts heat burning knife and basket. Not impossible
Although on a lot of the machines now, they don't have an element on the bottom, its built into the pump or water system. Can't see how it could happen on those machines.0 -
If the heater element is the zig zaggy thing :-) then yes it`s on the base of the dishwasher. Just went and had a look but it`s at the back whereas cutlery basket at the front. In fact element is not looking great and is discoloured in most parts - unsure if this is related. Machine is Smeg brand, ten years old.0

All I can think of is that some food was stuck there which has marked them. It doesn't get hot enough to scorch anything. Anything odd in the filter?Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Just the usual gunk. I did a proper clean of it yesterday. May be it's nothing, I was just a tad wary as it is an old machine and I run it overnight from time to time and wouldn't really want any fire risk.0
