American Express asking for credit card number before I can login

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone else has had problems logging into the American Express site? I can login but it takes me straight to a page that looks like a credit card asking me to fill in my credit card number and security code. I don't really want to enter them online.... The site has the secure padlock thing next to the URL but it just sounds dodgy.

I cant use the online contact facility without first entering my credit card details, and if I ring the number on the site there's a auto voice message asking me to key in my credit number!!

What do I do? What can I trust?

Thanks in advance,

Cheryl

Use only the telephone number that you have on the card or paper paper statement. Keying in card number will be fine on this - but not any other security code

Might you have malware on your computer - sending you to a dodgy site

Have you just received the card? Is this the first time you're logging in online?

... credit card number and security code.
    What security code?

Many banks and CC companies offer the card number as one of possible IDs for logging in. Barclaycard and Co-op/Smile spring to mind.

This is their login link, what do you get if you click on this https://global.americanexpress.com/myca/logon/emea/action/LogonHandler?request_type=LogonHandler&Face=en_GB&inav=gb_utility_login?

It only ever requests your user ID and password, and there are links for if you have forgotten either or both of them.

I'm sorry to say that if you refuse to enter them you won't be able to log in and see your account details.

They ask you to provide your card number, DOB and memorable date after you enter your card number and 4 numbered ID number, as you have entered your password wrong 3 times so they've locked your account.

Maybe you could call CS and ask them to unlock it, but not sure they'd do it.

The OP won't get very far in setting their card up online if they follow that non-advice.

OP, if you are seeing a page that looks like:

    http://i.imgur.com/V9UqNUE.png

and you are definitely visiting the global.americanexpress.com domain and have a padlock in your browser, this simply demonstrates that you're using your online service for the first time and are activating your card.
You'll need to give them the information they request to do so, i'm not sure why you'd have a problem with giving amex the info on the card they sent you.

It's quite common for providers to ask for the security code when activating a card - both Halifax and Santander have asked me to do this recently for new cards I've had issued. I don't think this is particularly a flag for concern if the card hasn't yet been activated.
