Charge for swapping URL Mail from POP3 to IMAP

Options
I have my own URL I use for email.

Having recently moved to a MacBook I want to sync my email between my iphone and macbook.

Presently I download mail via POP3. I have enquired about moving to IMAP and the hosting company said it will cost £2 per month. Hosting is only £8 a year!

Is an additional charge for IMAP common?

Forward it to a Gmail or outlook account. Both will pick up from a pop email account.

With IMAP mail is stored at the hosting company's computer(s) or a third party. Its always there (so it can be accessed by multiple devices) unless deleted (actually harder to do than people think).

POP mail is remotely stored too UNTIL its accessed by the first client and then its removed (depending on configuration).

I guess IMAP providers think they're providing a better service AND more storage.

Before you request a changeover, and if your mail is important to you, I recommend making a local backup using http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home-email-archiving.aspx
You may, of-course, be happy that all your existing mail is stored locally anyway (as would normally be the case with POP). You can test that your mail is locally held by closing your internet connection and checking you can read all your mail (headers, bodies, attachments!)

While fiendishlyclever may be offering a way for you to save £24/year you may feel the added complexity is worth spending that extra £24. (PS. how much storage do you get for that?)
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

I can understand companies charging more for IMAP. The mail servers will be by nature far more active than the POP3 ones. Probably needs newish servers/drives for speed, reliability and space, as all your emails are now stored on their server and instantly available. (And backup, which probably needs to be real-time). It is a better quality service and the £8 probably wouldn't cover the costs.
Different system and fair enough, I wouldn't expect a quality IMAP service for £8 a year.
