expensive calls

I used the 08430 150 150 (Cheap Calls) to call my friend on his Mexico landline from my BT landline. The moneysavingexpert.com website says the charge is 0.51p a minute. I was charged £5 for 47 minutes of conversation - that is nearly 11p a minute. Dishonest or a mistake? You be the judge. Beware of using Cheap Calls. And don't trust everything you see on the above website.

It is always a good idea to check the provider's website directly to confirm charges are correct. If you had done you would have seen that there seems to be call charges and access charges which add up to around 10.5p a minute. There is even a calculator to check your cost (£6.35 for 60min call)

Call costs for all 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers from all landline and mobile providers changed on 1 July 2015. See http://ukcalling.info/ which has been online since mid-September 2014. Newspaper adverts have been running since late January 2015. Radio adverts ran from the beginning of May 2015.
Additionally, the price cap which previously applied solely to BT's retail call prices for calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers was lifted on the same day. BT's prices no longer vary significantly from all other providers.
Two months before the changes came into effect, I made MSE staff aware of these changes and the impact they would have on the Call Checker, but it hasn't been amended to fit the new system.
You will have paid a 9.58p per minute Access Charge to BT and a 1p or 2p per minute Service Charge which is passed on to the international dial-through provider to pay for the international leg of the call.
The CheapCalls website should make you aware of their Service Charge and inform you that your phone provider will add their Access Charge.
BT's website details the new system and the 9.58p per minute Access Charge.
The Callchecker website should list both the BT Access Charge and the CheapCalls Service Charge - but it doesn't.

If I have to call abroad, I always use 18185.

Cost of calling a landline in Mexico 3p per minute plus 4p connection fee."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
What this means is that BT has decided to put out of business all these companies that used to offer cheap calls. Looking at the access numbers of these companies almost all of them start with 084 or 087 which is exactly what BT has targeted by introducing a very high access charge. Shame on BT and bye bye to all these losers — such as Cheap Call — who have acquiesced to this hammer blow by BT. They deserve to go bankrupt.0
