Refusing a delivery (very/yodel)

I purchased a gaming pc from Very.co.uk on Saturday, around 3 hours after I placed the order I spotted a problem with the specs of the machine. That made it in my eyes "not fit for purpose", I'll explain the actual issue at the bottom of this post.

I phoned them and explained I wished to cancel the order, which they did. They said it was ok since it was still being processed and hadnt yet shipped. They told me it would take upto 48 hours to refund my credit account.

Two days later (monday) and I get an email saying the item has been dispatched. I phoned them and was told I couldn't cancel the order now as it had already shipped despite the fact I'd cancelled it two days before. And now I would need to refuse delivery and wait 14 days for a credit refund.

Well it's now Tuesday and it has arrived. The yodel driver claimed I wasn't allowed to refuse an item I'd ordered and I should just arrange a return with very.

I've phoned very again to arrange a refund, although I must now pay for the return delivery and they may not accept it since all their computer equipment is "non returnable under approval guarantee"

I'm feeling a bit hard done to here, theyre charging me to return an item that should never have been shipped, and to rub salt in the wound they may choose not to accept the return, in which case I would incur a second delivery charge!

How should I proceed?

The original reason I cancelled was because the specs listed for the machine are as follows;
Core i7 4709
16Gb ram
1Tb Hdd
256Gb sdd
nVidia gtx970 graphics.
The problem lies with the power supply (psu). It is listed as a 350W unit. The nvidia gtx 970 video card alone requires a minimum of 500W to operate properly. For this reason the machine would be very unstable and would likely crash/reset when under load (gaming). For this reason I believe it not to be fit for purpose as a gaming pc (and potentially dangerous).

I suggest you read up on PSU ratings and loads if you are that worried. If you have bought a branded box, such as a HP or Dell with that sort of power supply it will be more than ample.

A 1300w £20 power supply would be far worse than a £100 350W power supply in delivering system stability.

Looking at Very its the MSI B85 NightBlade.

You will have absolutely no issues with gaming stability on this box. The headline wattage is not an issue here.
  • Thanks for the reply. It is indeed the msi nightblade, I used the power requirement calculater here:

*can't post link as I'm a new user* but it was the enermax power usage calculator.

It recommends a higher wattage, as does nvidia system requirements, i'm really tempted to just open the box and give it a try. But that would in the eyes of Very be my accepting the item and would mean returns would not be possible.

I've thought about replacing the psu however it's incredibly fiddly and requires removing the optical drive, hdd and drive bays. And I didn't really want to mess around with the insides of a brand new unit.

Anybody know, if I do test it out and my fears are confirmed (ie crashing etc) would I be able to return as faulty?

If it crashes you speak to MSI. Its a pre built system, and MSI know what they are doing.

Ignore a power usage calculator, it will not be reflective of the mATX setup on this box - they are specifically tuned to function and work correctly. (Besides, its in Enermax's interests to upsell a completely overspecced piece of kit - the margins are in the higher products).

You have nothing to worry about with this box. Really...
  • Thanks for the reassurance.
I will give it a try. Got crysis 3 somewhere, if running that on high doesn't kill it, nothing will i guess. I'm probably worrying over nothing :)
