Exhaust noise Ford Focus

I have a 10 year old Mk 1 Focus 1.6, and recently there has been what I can only describe as a noise like a raspberry seemingly coming from the exhaust. Its not terribly loud, but it is noticeable.

What would be the cost be of replacing the exhaust? I live in a rural area, so options are limited as to shopping around, and I'd like to know in advance what I need to budget for.

Thanks,

    Thanks,
It depends where the exhaust is blowing from. Exhausts have different sections, some are simple pipes and some are silencers and catalytic converters. Depending on the section, they vary in cost from a few pounds to several hundred. There are varying qualities.

Without knowing where the exhaust is damaged, it isn't really possible to say how much, but the main thing to know is that you do not necessarily need the whole system replacing. A decent exhaust replacement firm will explain the problem and show what needs to be done.

Give a couple a ring and they should be able to give you an idea of the price range you are looking at, but without seeing the car don't expect them to give you a firm price.

IMO your better off investigating and trying to locate the issue yourself. It's not that difficult, grab a decent torch, throw down a towel and have a peak under the car where you think the problem is.

If it's a joint, this can be fixed cheaply with exhaust paste/putty/clamps, if it's holed, then identify the section and go to the garage armed with this knowledge.

The mid section went on my exhaust last year and two different garages tried to con me into buying a full new system, which would have set me back £400+.

Compared to just the mid section a couple of exhaust clamps and a bit of sealing paste, £85.

They actually lied to me, stating that my silencer was hanging on a thread, unsupported, shaking the exhaust around and saying it shouldn't move at all (lies), but I could clearly see the hangars where fully in tact.
Granted the guy didn't know me, didn't know I practically built an entire car in my garage at home, but I think this winds me up even more, because I can see how they con the average customer.

One of these places used (note past tense) to be my regular garage for work and MOTs on both my cars.

The other was a lesser known tyre/exhuast chain.
