Just got a webcam, with built in microphone. its a plug & play, USB connection. It has the USB and jack plug that ( I presume) plugs into the headphone connection on my monitor. I've downloaded Skype, and when I ran the test call, nothing happens. If I unplug the headphone connection I can here the tesst voice through the monitor, but it isn't picking up my voice. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Think logically about what you just typed. You plugged the *microphone* into your *headphone* socket. (try speaking out of your ears and you'll see what I mean) ;)

Fumble around the back of your PC and you should find the sound input/outputs. They will be colour coded, the microphone input is pink.

Next you need to tell skype which input to use to pick up your voice (chances are it will have set itself already).

In Skype go to Tools - Options then Sound Devices. Your sound device should show on the Audio in setting (if you have more than one audio input just make sure it's set to the right one)

    That should do it.

Sorry for the delay, been a bit under the weather. Got what you mean- I'm a bit green when it comes to techie stuff. I've had a look at the back of my PC, and there isn't a pink output. The PC is about 4yrs old. Dont really want to exchange it yet.

Thought it would have been colour-coded (4 years old is a new 'un!) - should be some small drawings - the mic input will have something like an ice-cream cone.

Going to get big son to check it for me later. The back of my PC looks like a jungle after the rainy season. How do all the wires get twisted???? I dont do it, so who does?

  • That'll be the wire-tangling fairies. You should see what they've done behind my TV! :D
