How to Store Wedding Dress

How do we store the wedding dress from our big day?
I've heard using vacuum bags is good as it keeps it fresh but then someone else wrote that it traps moisture and risks mould. I also read that a big plastic tub with acid free tissue paper is okay but what is best for the long term?

What do bridal stores recommend? It would amaze me if a link-selling opportunity was missed.

Personally, as long as you're in a dry environment I think vacuum bags are fine. You can get them from the 99p shop.

You need a pH neutral cardboard box and lots of acid free paper to go in between each layer. Ebay is a good place to look - search wedding dress storage and you should get plenty of results.

Well I've just dumped hers in a heap on top of the boards in the attic :)

You 'should' get it professionally dry cleaned and then get the cleaners to fold it in a box with acid free tissue paper. Most dry cleaners and bridal shops will do this for about £50 - £75.

Mine is in the loft, in its storage bag with gravy down the front and about a foot of dirt up the inside from the train being dragged on the floor all night.
  • I agree with Bean83, I got married in 2004 and had my dress dry cleaned and then boxed in a PH neutral box with tons of acid free paper.

Still looks as good as new now! I paid about £70 to have this done by the dry cleaners at the time but thought it was worth it given the value of the dress.

Clearly want's too, or else the question would be 'where's the best place to sell my wedding dress/donate to'.

I still have mine, although I lobbed the train off, cut it to the knee and added flowers and made it into a completely different dress to wear :rotfl:

I don't think it's unusual to keep clothing, may be wrong though.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Trouble with a wedding dress is that they're only really useful for weddings - and most people hope to only have one of those. What you did with yours sounds like a great idea, but to keep something that has a potentially high resale value just for nostalgic purposes doesn't sound very MSE :money:
  • I don't know many second hand wedding dresses that sell for a lot, so I don't know if it is worth selling if you are quite fond of it.

All the local bridal shops to me professionally clean your dress after use and put it in a box with acid free paper etc.
