TAX Code

I have been in the same job since June 2014 and i was on the correct tax code up until april this year when my tax code changed to 50l which allowed earnings of £500 before i was required to pay tax.

Im on a basic salary of 18k and i do earn uncapped comission aswell which varies each month.

I got the tax code changed anyway but they changed it to 906l which allows me to earn £9600. Everyone on my team seems to have a tax code of 1006l or similar allowing a tax free allowance of £10600 which i believe is correct.

Is there any reason why mines lower? am i missing something? i havent got or had a second job atall and as much as id like to speak to HMRC about it i work shifts and even on my half hour dinner cant get through to them?

Sorry to be a pedant but a Code of 906 would give you a Tax Free Figure of 9060, and likewise a Code of 1006 would give you 10060.
But I think you mean the Codes are 960 and 1060 anyway, hey ho :)

Yes, the OP started a duplicate thread in the Cutting Tax board shortly after this one and I pointed out the same discrepancy on there.

  • I have a question also similar.
In my previous employment from 1989 to 2008 I was over paying tax as my tool allowance was not taken into consideration. Just prior to leaving that employer the tax office altered my tax code to allow me to partly claim some of the overpayments back- the tax office admitted fault though could only deal with the previous five years.
Seven years on however I still have an adjust tax code of 1072L- every other employee at my new firm is on the standard 1060lL code. Should I inform the tax office or just take it as correct?

You should be informing HMRC if the tool allowance no longer applies. HMRC will just assume it still applies until you tell them otherwise.
  • The tool allowance no longer qualifies, it was the adjustment of the tax code to recover the overpayment of the tax due to the tool allowance never been incorporated for the previous 19 years at the other employment. As I understood it at the time my tax code would be adjust in an attempt to reclaim the past five years overpayment at the time(2008) of the enquiry.
