After we got divorced I remember HMRC sending a letter to me and the ex wife saying that we'd been over paid child tax credit...my half was £186. Now she kicked up a fuss over this so I paid up pronto. Now four years on I've just had a letter from HMRC again saying that I owe that amount as their records say that I haven't paid it ! Now I know I paid...but probably by Credit card...now obsolete obviously...so I've no way of proving that I paid. Any advice. Thanks in advance.

Maybe you paid half but did she pay the other half.
I would think you would be jont and severely liable for the whole amount to the honest.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Check your bank statements for this payment. Also ask your credit card provider for statements for the period in question. You will have to provide proof so there must be some evidence somewhere.0

She paid her half same time as I did. She got the same letter this week and called them ...they said yes...after searching she'd paid. I've checked bank statements online and didn't pay through bank for def....and the Barclaycard I had then is of course no more and I have no statements from back then. I called HMRC...they said there was no record of payment...just like they told the ex...but then they were wrong with that initially ...but they reinforced their decision in saying that they have no record. I know I paid but have no proof !0

All financial institutions have by law to keep records for a minimum of 6 years and usually 12 years. Just get onto the credit card company and obtain the proofStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

In June 2013 you posted this;Evening all.I received a letter from HMRC stating that when we were married we received an overpayment of £357 for child tax credit up to when I left in july 2011...we got divorced in november. It was a demand from the HMRC debt collecting for half the amount. The thing is...I knew the wife was getting child tax benefit...I didn't know how much, she dealt with it...and the tax credit went into her bank account.I feel aggrieved at having to pay half of this as I just think she's stitched me up once more.Have I got to pay this ? I called the debt company and was more or less press ganged into setting up a DD to pay it off over a year....they said if I didn't pay the debt would be ongoing and my credit would suffer.I'm struggling enough as it is without this.Any ideas...suggestions ? Thanks for reading.
Well, did you arrange a DD and pay it in 2013 ..or did you pay it by Credit Card when you split up in 2011 ?
Your memory isn't really good enough to rely on....0 -
Wow !!!!! I do remember this and thanks for posting again. After reading I called up Barclaycard and they confirmed a payment to HMRC but not for that amount. Now the only thing I can think of is that I paid up NI stamps that I possibly owed. Anyway...I think this probably confirms now that I haven't paid it !!! Ah well....thanks all....0

Hi, Four years ! Im had a letter from them going back to 2009, iv phoned 4 times each time its sorted they say.
Wrote 3 letters each reply back from a different person.
I have now sent a complaint letter off.
IMO all the people who dealt with me should be made to train
again on a training wage.
This training should include sorting the problem out from start to finish, making both parties happy0 -
Paid up ! Nothing to show in my bank to say that I paid....and old Barclaycard CC showed a payment to HMRC but not for that amount...so that could be NI payment...so decided to pay it and do without the hassle of getting debt letters etc...cheers all0
