NTL Broadband 2Mb to 20Mb, what difference will I see....?

may seem like a daft question but I use a wired desktop (rarely) and a wireless laptop (all the time) in another room from the modem/router.

I don`t do much downloading but would like to see pages loading faster.

What I don`t want to do is upgrade only to find for day to day use there is little difference.

Thanks in advance.

For day to day use as in browsing and e-mailing there will be very little difference if any at all.unless you go to sites with massive graphics or large flash movies then there might be an improvement. It will however be better for streaming videos or the like.

The thing to remember is that the speed the web page loads is governed by the server and not your connection. Upgrading might help some but not all websites.

If you use both computers simultaneously you might notice a difference, as well as with streaming sites like youtube (as sco0ter said).
Also, if you play online games, then faster is better.
But otherwise, you probably won't. It might be worth looking at the 4 meg package, as that might be a bit more noticeable, but otherwise, save your money.

In response to marleyboy - wireless (802.11g) should operate at 54mbps (sat right next to the router), and usually doesn't drop too much, so will be faster than the broadband connection, but if you live in a cottage with 3ft thick walls or sit right at the end of your garden, a slower connection speed is possible (but I'm guessing you wouldn't have NTL then).

I hadn't realised they'd still not sorted out the issues with 20meg.

As it is right now, the 20meg service is slower than the 2meg service, due to a "nationwide" fault. you would only really notice the difference if you were downloading, be it that you are wireless, i think your router would only give you a maximum connection of i think 2meg max, but I could be wrong, I guess it depends on the router you have. although my (wired) connections can give me "technically" the full 20meg, my (wireless) connections are limited to 2meg. Personally, if I was you, I would stick with the 2meg for your purpose.

  • I have the 20 Meg service and it runs happily at the full 20 Meg...

Only time you'll notice a difference is on downloads (downloading at 2 Megabytes a second for the first time is exciting :T
