Fly infestation!

We went on holiday recently for a week. My father in law was staying at our house while we were away and think he must have thrown something in the kitchen bin and not emptied it as when we got home, there were maggots all over the bin! We took the bin outside and cleaned it thoroughly and cleaned the kitchen floors. Now, just under 2 weeks after coming back, there are flies that keep appearing in the house. They are all the same kind of fly. Not fruit flies, just black medium sized ones. I'm probably killing about 6 or 7 a day so it's not a major infestation but I'm almost certain they aren't just flying in from outside. They are quite slow so quite easy to kill if I don't have the fly spray to hand but does anyone have any advice as to how to get rid of them? I can't see where they are coming from and the house is clean.

    Google "Cluster Fly"

If that's what you have.... gulp!

I'll post advice if it is...
  • Just had a look. I don't think that's what they are. They appear to be all black.

Hi, I make sure all windows are closed then give each room a good spray of fly spray then close each door. You may have to do this for a few days.

I also spray something that was recommended by a friend. It's a mix of 40 odd essential oils. It is supposed to clear the air but I find it also deters insects. It is very strong, so only use a few squirts.

You can probably find it cheaper than this but this is the one.

  • Thanks I will give that a try. It's really odd because it's almost like I get one at a time. I see one, kill it then another appears. If I wasn't so sure I'd killed the first one, I'd think it was the same bloody one! I did have a good clean out of the kitchen cupboard under the sink which gets a bit damp and I haven't seen one since then (didn't see any under there either). I also steam cleaned the floors and down one edge of the flooring where we don't have beading so there is a slight gap between the floor tiles and skirting board. I think they must be in the kitchen as that's where I seem to find most.
