  • One little tool I'm finding very handy re the weed-pulling I do is one of those special ones designed to pull up dandelions (cant remember what its called). I find it quite handy (due to the long main bit on it) for helping with getting other weeds out too.

I certainly use covering the soil with black plastic or permeable membrane to kill off weeds in the first place.

I've learnt that keeping on top of weeds (with a quick swipe with a hoe at intervals) means they don't get the chance to get that difficult. Catch them small and they don't have the chance to get very far ahead - but leave it and some of them will develop roots that have gone rather long and/or thick.

Couch grass that's only had the chance to get to a couple of inches high = one very quick easy tug and its out. Couch grass left to grow on to a foot or more high = a lot more physical effort and a bit of digging to get out. I'm learning by experience...

    Sounds interesting thanks!

    How quick do they die?

Depend upon the weather, it's best doing on a roasting hot day when the weeds are thirsty. But if you're only paying 25p for a kilo of salt in Tesco you can afford to go over them time & time again over a few days. Some die after the first dose others are more persistent.

What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
