Link too long for mobile users

I was asked to remove a link by a poster when posting on the housing and renting forum as it was too long for mobile users.

My links tend to be long as I often quote government legislation.

Is there something that I should be changing when I give a link?

Don't remove the links...there's a whole lot of non mobile users that will be helped by them.

On the reply panel there is a little web link symbol (next to the picture that looks like the pyramids). You can use that instead.

The formatting on the mobile version is all over the place, any long link or picture sends the whole page off.

Thanks. So if I use that web link symbol then will that format it correctly for mobile users?

I am assuming the poster meant that they were using a mobile phone rather than a computer (excuse my ignorance!)

On the thread in question look at Old Git's link - I think that's what the other poster means, so you just see a word or two and not the whole thing.

They could be talking about a tablet or a mobile, both revert to the mobile setting.

That is not something a user should have to take care of - it's a flat out bug, and should be reported as such.

Have tried your suggestion and although the link appeared when I clicked on it the message was this link isn't available!

Oh well, have at least tried.
  • I'm still using the old look forum (Hate the new look!) and to make a short link on the old site you have to use BB code, or click the "Switch Editor Mode" button in the top right hand corner of the editor before using the Hyperlink button (and even then you need to change the middle of the code to the short link)

BB code uses square brackets, I've used curly brackets instead to show you how it should look.

I'm not sure that's still a problem with the new look forum, but I'm not willing to switch back to the new look to check just in case I get stuck there!

In the old look forum it's easy enough:
    1. Click the A/A link in the top right hand corner of the editor.
    2. Enter the full URL into the dialogue box that pops up.
    3. Change the blue highlighted text to something short like ___ Link.
