Rossendales - Inland Revenue

So I live abroad most of the year. I do not have any income, I am not a director of any companies I am a SAHM. My husband does his tax returns and I don't have any tax returns to do as I do not earn any income.

I arrive to visit my mother this June to find a letter from the Inland Revenue advising me I owe them £1600 for not filing a tax return for the last five years. I phone them, they look at my file, confirm it was an error and advise the fine is cleared nothing is owing.

Next I get a phonecall from Rossendales. They are aggressive and rude. They tell me even if I am not earning any money I still need to file a tax return - I ask them what do they know about tax returns they are a debt collector not the tax office so speak to their client. Argument ensues I hang up.

I receive letters from Rossendales. I phone the Inland Revenue again, they confirm my file is clear nothing is owed, I ask them to call off their dogs they advise the debt collectors should be informed.

Still am receiving threatening letters and regular phonecalls from Rossendales over a month later. I've read horror stories about them turning up on peoples doorsteps and being violent and aggressive. I don't really want them turning up at my mothers house when I am not here and I leave in a few weeks.

So any advice how to get rid of them?

No such thing as Inland Revenue it's most probably HMRC.

You've done all that you can. If they do turn up tell your mother to tell them politely to leave. Get your mother to show them her ID to prove she isn't really you and maybe even give your mother a copy of your plane ticket showing you've left the country. They won't chase you there.

They are not violent and aggressive in every single case they do actually listen to reason and will back off when requested in a polite manner.

Issue Inland revenue with a harassment notice that they are jointly responsible for the actions of their agents who are causing you alarm and distress and to a third party and make it clear you will sue for damages if they do not call the agents off.

Most importantly stop phoning HMRC and get something in WRITING.

This sort of advice really makes my blood boil. No. Don't show "ID". In fact, we don't have "ID" as such in this country. Some people do have documents that can be used as identification, but others don't.

If these scum turn up tell them to go away and do not return. !!!!!!! Someone turns up on your doorstep and obliges you to prove who YOU are!! I don't think so!

Why on earth do people give their phone numbers to HMRC? This is what happens when you do.

I'm just trying to offer advice to get them to go away in a pleasant manner and write on their report the debtor no longer lives in the property. Anything can be used as ID. I'm assuming the occupant of the property has at the very least a council tax bill which should hopefully not show the name of the debtor as the occupier. If you want to be militant with Rossendales bailiffs then go ahead but it's quite easy to just get them to go away and never attempt to return. They get debtors all the time saying they are someone else and will not believe every person is who they say they are. They will probably turn aggressive if you tell the scum to go away and never return in that tone. They don't give up easily like that. I'd just say this is me (showing some form of ID) the debtor don't live here any more now would you mind I'm busy now can you tell that to your office and can you leave me alone. I doubt they'll return and they'll probably even say thanks for your time.
