Can't find my gas supplier

I recently bought a house and haven't been able to find out who the gas supplier is.

I found out that the previous owner sadly passed away four days after completion so was concerned that the energy suppliers may not have been notified of the change. I have managed to track down the electricity supplier but not the gas supplier. I have tried calling the MPRN helpline, but when it gets to the point where they say "your gas supplier is...", it just doesn't say anything!

We're definitely getting gas supplied as the boiler is working. has anyone come across this before? Short of ringing around all the energy companies, all I can think to do is sit and wait for a bill to come through the letterbox!

Without an answer from MPRN, your best bet is to track back through the house purchase paperwork via the vendors solicitors, who hopefully will be dealing with the Estate
It's very much in the interests of the Executors to co-operate as they are responsible for the Gas billing till you can advise the supplier that you are now the occupier

You have probably done this already and it does not answer your question, but take a photo of the meter readings. I would even consider showing something else in the photo that can date the photo to being after a certain date, e.g. a newspaper headline.

You could decide who you want your gas to be with, then call that company to see if they can advise how you switch to them without knowing the current supplier. (If they aren't helpful you may wish to consider another supplier.)

Quite likely that it was on a dual fuel, so try the same supplier as for the electricity. If not the most likely candidate is BG as the legacy supplier, even more so if the former occupier was elderly and had never switched.
The fact that the gas supply is live tells you nothing: supplies are not disconnected upon a change of ownership and haven't been for decades now.

Where can I go to find out who my Gas Supplier is?

You can call the Xoserve Domestic Consumer M Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. If you provide your address they will search their records and locate your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) and confirm who your current Gas Supplier is.

NB: Please note that only the occupier of the property or a person calling on the occupier’s behalf is entitled to use this service. There is no on-line version of this service.

I would suggest that if you are experiencing an error from the automated response (I'm guessing the automated response is a little like directory enquiries have) then ring again and explain the issue you have before you are passed to the automatic response.

Btw, details of current energy suppliers are normally requested by your solicitor as part of the purchase enquiries, so refer to the response received. If no response was received, or the answer was not given, refer to your solicitor who should have highlighted this to you before you went ahead with the purchase.
