You should be ale to log it as a dispute with Noddle and they would investigate as well I think. Write a complaint to Provident setting it out in your letter that the agent confirmed it is not your account and ask that they remove it as soon as possible.
It shouldn't show as a settled debt as it was never yours, and if it remains on there you could take it to the FOS.

When making a complaint in writing, it might help to print a screenshot picture of the entry in question to prove it is there otherwise they may come back with, "well, we can't see it so it must not be there".

And make sure you get some compensation off them. Minimum £50 if there have been no adverse effects on your credit worthiness; a lot more if there has.

ok , a week on and an update

a verbal complaint was made to the agent , on sun the 19th , she spoke to her manager , who promised to ring me back on Monday the 20th , no call received.

verbal (phone complaint to provident on Monday the 20th , followed up by an online complaint , and a written one (signed for) totally aukward woman on the phone who refused to transfer my call , std email "thank you" for your complaint received late on Monday.

no contact or phone calls/emails all week , agent called on fri 24th , and I showed her printout , I asked why the manager had not contacted me? , manager rang me fri evening , stating that he had tried to ring on Monday , but had wrong number (agent knew my number , also it is on all paperwork) , he states a mistake had been made , but corrected immediately and it was NOT on my credit report!!!

call back from provident today , in response to manager ringing them , NOT in response to my verbal complaint , online complaint or written complaint!!!!! , they had not been assessed yet!!!!!

in a 2 way recorded conversation , she admitted that a mistake had been made , and it had been recorded by expedian (I think she said that) and call credit.

she accepted that the agent and the manager had lied to me , she admitted bad service , she also promised to remove COMPLETLY any reference to this , on all credit reports , she then went on to offer me £25 in compensation for my time , phone calls and letters .

as I have had to apply for several statutory credit reports , and I will have to re apply in a few mths , I thought this was a bit "low".

I have stated that I am not happy , and until they can offer compensation to exceed my outgoings and time (and worry/stress) they cannot class the case as closed ,

If they do not sort this correctly I will bide my time (another 7 weeks) and get the FOS involved.

I "think" if they get involved , does it not cost them a few hundred?

edit (2015) £550 after the first 25 "free" cases
