OH tells me he is unable to listen to test match special in his five year old car because it does not have digital radio? Is this true?

That is perfectly true if he wants to listen to it on Radio 5 live Sports Extra which is a DAB transmission.
Why doesn't he listen to it on Radio 4 long wave instead?0 -

Radio 198 kHz as I recall. Occasionally interrupted for a shipping forecast but you'll likely only miss 2 or 3 English wickets falling.0

Not all radios have long wave so he may not be able to get it.0

He could always get a small portable DAB radio to listen to at home or in the car.0

I recently bought one of these, and haven't used FM/LW/MW since.

It's a great piece of kit that works very well and I have never yet lost a signal."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

I don't use that facility. I have a Mondeo Mk4 and plug the device directly into the Aux socket in the glovebox and use the Aux setting on the radio - just as if I was playing an iPod or other device through the radio - and so do not suffer the problem you mentioned.
I do travel quite extensively both to the North West and South West and have not yet met a problem."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Just had my first day of DAB in the car. What a pile of poo. Probably OK for you city dwellers but absolute pants in our rural area. Music keeps skipping just like it did in the old days when they played discs on the radio. Back to FM for me.0

It is pretty hit and miss in the frozen north, probably more miss than hit unless you are lucky in your journeys. Other people say that they get a good signal on the A9 but mine always stopped at the House of Bruar heading north and was intermittent from then until past Slochd, and heading west from the A9 you'd be lucky to get anything.0
