Changing area - effect on UC claim

Hi, Thanks for any help anyone can give.

As of tomorrow I shall be unemployed and available for work. I plan to stay in my current flat in Sheffield until my tenancy ends on 26 July, after which, if I haven't found work, I will have to move back home with my father in another area.

If I start a claim for Universal Credit here, so I have enough to live off until I find a fulltime job, (I won't need HB as the rent is paid up on my flat and my father won't charge me rent), how will moving areas affect my claim? Will I have to make a new claim once I've moved, or will they just carry it on?

Sorry to seem dim, but I've never claimed any benefits before and don't know how the system works.

I don't believe new claimants are making a claim to Universal Credit in Sheffield currently so you would claim JSA and then have to make a new claim to either UC or JSA wherever you moved to.

  • Thank you. So if I claim JSA in Sheffield and I don't find work before I leave there, will they still pay me (in arrears?) for the week I was there?

The first three days are not payable, in any event.

AFAIK, it doesn't matter that you've paid the rent in advance yourself from employment income, I believe you can still get HB so if you are entitled, do claim. That money will help you out until you get a job.

A tenant can't claim HB if they live in the same property as a close relative who is their landlord. If you move back to your dad's house, you can't claim HB even if he did charge you rent.

I believe its seven waiting days now. You should still make the claim in Sheffield first as you won't have to wait another seven when you move.
