What paint for window frame in high condensation.

Hi, my sons bedroom suffers from condensation.
At the moment a lot of the paint has lifted from the wooden window frame exposing the bare wood.

We are getting to grips with the condensation by using a dehumidifier but, during the winter months, the frames still get damp.

What internal paint would you recommend that will withstand these damp conditions?

thanks

  • Sort out the condensation fit trickle vents, air vent, extractor, double glazed window etc. Using a more water resistant paint is just going to move the problem elsewhere.

Dehumidifiers don’t solve the problems they tend to just prolong them…
  • I agree with brightontraveller but I am curious as to which dehumidifier you are using and how big the room is?

Agree with this apart from the trickle vents.

Just open the windows to "air" the room, its what we have done for centuries and it worked. As I've pointed out numerous times why fit energy efficient, air tight windows and then stick a hole in it to let the draughts in, makes no sense whatsoever, just open the windows.
Double glazing is the main alteration thats needed if its currently single glazed. Incidently, if the current windows don't have trickle vents any replacements don't have to have them fitted. They are a waste of time and money. I would also check to see if the external walls are insulated ,if not then I would recommend insulating them.

As for painting, if the windows are replaced with timber DG then any good quality finishes will be fine but don't buy the paint from B&Q,Wickes,Homebase etc that is marketed as their own brands. Generally speaking you get what you pay for, buy cheap and you will buy twice.
  • Thanks,
It's a box room with 2 outside walls and part of the floor overhangs the front door.

The walls are solid so no cavity to fill.
The room has a bay window and a flat roof over the bay.
The bay is 3 standard panes wide an 1 standard pane deep.
There are 5 panes altogether and 3 opening skylights.
    The window frames are aluminium.

The room is 10' x 6'9" (into the bay)
or(6'9" x 6'9" + a bit of bay - the bay is narrower than the rest of the room)

The dehumidifier is a Delonghi DEM 10.

Unfortunately my son likes to sleep with the door shut.
The skylight windows are usually open day and night.

It's a very cold room. I keep the central heating on in the room most of the time but the damp air seems to collect there.

    Thanks for the advice.

I was thinking about exterior paint as OH is painting the outside at the moment, but wondered if it was safe to use inside.

Don't paint them. Aluminium windows can be powder coated with a finish but this is done during the manufacturing process. Paint won't stick to them any sense even if you "key" (rough up) the surface. You can buy specific paints for aluminium which acid etch the surface but this is a job for specialist professionals and the cost would out weigh the benefit. Old style aluminium windows are the least efficient of all the materials.

Sounds like a prime case for new replacement windows.
  • Thanks for such a helpful reply.

The aluminium windows are set into a wooden frame. It's the wooden frame and window sill that I want to paint.
I will keep the aluminium as it is.
