Abbey used to put in credits before taking debits as well. Hoping they still work the same way.

I'm just in the process of moving back to them for the 8% account after taking ££ from A&L over the last few years.

  • `Be nice to them say it was a computer thing you didnt know about and try and get your money back. Reclaiming the charges aint going to work unless this test case comes to fruition and ching chings.

BTW I have been scammed by something very similar before by the bank, i got know where on the phone with them in fact the guy was just trying to !!!! me off by as much as possible. So i booked an appointment in branch, one of there private banking guys saw me and was very nice and refunded me it (by the way i am not a premier banker im just low life scum that doesnt get fat cat pay, was just the guy i got to see)

I am VERY responsible, & have ALWAYS made sure that sufficient funds are in my account in time. My issue here is not being told what constitutes 'in time'. If a DD is due out on the 2nd of the month I was unaware that funds needed to be there on the 1st of the month.

Dont let people that post this wind you up, as far as im concerned the banks dont make it explicit to the customers the way their computer systems have been programmed by their systems requirements/programmers. Thus how can it be your fault, they set up their system like that! Other banks set up their systems to not con people this ways as another poster says.

Its a line of computer code, a veritable mouse trap that they have set up, it costs nothing to actuate a line of code but it then deducts loads of money from you and automatically sends you a ghey letter. No human involvement a license to print money, just like fractional banking. Immoral, probably illegal and yet people sit down, take it and blaim themselfs.

No they don't in their T & C it says please ensure there is enough money in the account before close of business the day before a DD is due to be taken.

If this hasn't happened before, have you tried asking nicely to get the charges refunded?

Yes, I have asked- very nicely. They admitted I had never gone overdrawn before, but still said, "we have acted within our terms & conditions". Grr!

I went into my branch who politely told me that they couldn't authorise ANYTHING. In that case they are no more than a cash machine with legs!
  • Try ringing them, then. If that fails write a compliant letter next.

BTW it wasnt A+L I got refunded in branch it was LLoyds.

Good point & some great phrases there, thanks. I can't afford to let this one lie & will be taking it further with my bank. You're right! Just because they set their system up like that (unlike other banks) how am I expected to know?

Thanks, yes- I am just about to open Word to type a letter! The phone calls (yes, plural) I've made just keep going on about this test case, and their inability to do anything until then.

Regardless of whether the debits are collected first and credits last are down to "computer codes" or whatever, it is STILL in the terms and conditions of your account that money for DD has to be in the account and cleared the banking day before the DD is due.

Good luck on recaliaiming the charge tough, i hope it works for you
