Egg claim refused, question about it

I am getting ready to go to the ombudsman however I wanted to check the rejection reason with others before I did. Egg rejected the claim because I advised I may not have been able to pay if made redundant or was sick at the time. I forgot at the time of submitting that I would have gotten statutory sick pay which covered the payments at the time and was also living with parents pretty much rent free.

Is this grounds for a rejection even though I was not aware of the policy at the time?

Statutory sick pay is insufficient and will not help your complaint but more likely to go against you. Living with parents is irrelevant as this is to cover the credit card payments not rent (albeit lack of it). Furthermore irrelevant as this would be a non advised sale so its not up to them to check your suitability for the PPI.

Statutory sick pay is about £100 per week. Everyone gets it if they don't get private sick pay, however, it is deemed insufficient even to pay the basic costs of living. Sick pay is only really an advantage where it is six months or more at full pay. The stance of FOS is generally that a self-respecting adult would want to stand on their own two feet rather than relying on family to help them out.

The problem with saying you weren't aware of it is that there are so many people who say that and have just forgotten over the course of time or are just trying their luck. It's difficult to know which is which. I suggest seeing if there are any more provable reasons, e.g. significant exclusions on the policy which would have made it difficult for you to claim.
  • I had also had PPI on my Egg Card.
Following Egg's rejection of my claim, based simply on the fact I had made an online application, read the terms and conditions, and I was responsible for my own decision.
I contacted the FSO saying that I had forgotten to add in my claim that I had both unemployment insurance and permanent health insurance at the time of the original application.
At the FSO's suggestion, I am writing to EGG asking them to reconsider my claim.
Has anyone made a successful claim on this basis?

Do you dispute their version of events or is it correct? If the latter then I honestly think you'd be lucky! Your complaint is effectively that you bought something you didn't need, which is not their fault. If their version of events is inaccurate that may be different.

    Your complaint reason is weak.

Whilst advised cases are meant to take into account existing plans, it is not a requirement on non-advised cases. You bought this cover. No-one sold it to you.

So, you will be reliant on a goodwill gesture from Egg.

I successfully complained to Egg even though it was an online application because I had sufficient savings to cover me in the event of anything happening and good work benefits etc.
