Stainless steel or white cooker/hob - your opinions please

Options
Hi,

We are getting our kitchen updated soon and have been looking at ovens and hobs. We have seen some we like that are suitable but they come in a choice of white or stainless steel. Now, I like the look of stainless steel but, I've heard it's a pig to keep clean?

I also like white and of course that seems as if it will be much easier to keep sparkling.

What does everybody else prefer??

    A pig to keep clean?

Visit a professional kitchen - restaurant for example. There is a reason it will be stainless steel and not white.

But for your kitchen whatever is better aesthetically - and only you can know that. What colour is your sink?

    Sink will be stainless steel.

I have heard that stainless steel tends to smear and streak and you really have to keep buffing it for it to stay clean. Obviously, the actual cleanliness and hygiene aspect will be fine, as in it will be cleaned like any other. It was more the streaks etc I was concerned about!

I've had both. Stainless steel are much better now and I currently have stainless steel. I find that washing with hot soapy water and then drying/buffing with kitchen roll does the trick and it's streak free.
White ones can be prone to chipping if anything is dropped/banged on it.

I would go for steel too then. Very difficult to damage and not bad to clean.

Stainless steel IS nightmare, you're right.

Double nightmare if you have a gas hob, and have to remove the brackets/rings every.single.time. to clean it!!

I went for an induction hob - black (glass?) - easy to keep clean and looks v. stylish.

I am also changing my SS sink to a black granite one as that is also a nightmare to keep clean!

    Good luck :)

I find big flat areas of stainless steel show every fingerprint & look awful. But with a sink or hob there's no big flat area so they don't look too bad.

My hob is dark brown & it looks beautiful all the time, but I do clean it now & then.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

    Thanks all!

I do like the look of the stainless steel and yes, would be a gas hob, I think - <off she goes to look at induction ones>.

We are doing this on a smaller budget than we would have liked so we are having to work with the utilities staying where they are, which means we are limited slightly.

All in all though, it will be a complete upgrade from the 1970's affair we have now!!

Stainless steel will obviously go with your sink then, to keep clean, just warm damp cloth with spots of washing up liquid on it, then as C.C.L. says dry/polish off with kitchen roll.

Another tip is to wipe with baby oil, takes all streaks and fingerprints off.

Oh, and in mho - stainless steel looks more expensive.

There's a big difference between real stainless steel, and stainless steel effect. Some appliance manufacturers aren't always as clear as they should be that you're getting the effect version.

I have a stainless steel gas hob. Its not too bad to keep clean sure you have to take it all off but it takes like 5 mins when doing the dishes if you do it regularly. White could chip
