Virgin Media doing a 'BT FON'

It seems that Virgin Media are set to roll out a SuperHub update that will make the hub a public wi-fi hotspot similar to the service BT FON provides. Virgin say that unlike BT FON which takes some bandwidth from the owner of the hub, they will increase the bandwidth for those virgin participants to compensate.
Personally I think Virgin's time and money would be better spent sorting out all the network congestion and lack of speed problems customers are experiencing in high utilisation areas of the country.

They were talking about putting wifi hotspots in their cabinets some years back. That never happened. Maybe this is their cheapskate alternative. Judging by the numerous bad firmwares they produced for the first Superhub I wouldn't put too many bets on this one being trouble free. Probably time to buy your own router and put the hub in modem mode (assuming they'll still allow that).
I hope any guest users are going to get a different IP from the host - not much fun getting your door kicked in and all your gear bagged up and taken away because some local jihadi or kiddy fiddler decided to use your hot spot.
=== ah I see the article says it will ===0 -
I don't think they'll ever remove the Modem Mode as far too many people, including me with my Asus router, make use of it. People would leave in droves if they did that.... Interesting.
So how do I get a BT FON password? I'm a BT customer.0 -

Being able to access BT hotspots though is conditional on you allowing yours to be used as a hotspot. I dont have good bandwidth so requested FON disabled. I was told i wouldnt be able to use any hotspots after that.0

Great. My 50Mb drops to 5Mb at 8pm due to a utilisation fault (or as I call it, over selling). All customer services can do is offer discounts (which probably cancels out the profits from new customers ).
Hopefully this will be under customer control (so you can opt out ).
Comcast in the US have done something similar I believe...0
