Another Norton Question

My Norton anti virus subscription runs out end of this month and I'm so sick of it slowing and clogging up my system I've decided to go with AVG or one of the other anti virus programs I''ve heard good things about on here.

BUT - my norton antivirus is part of Norton systemworks which includes One Button Check Up and which I have found invaluable for finding and fixing registry problems etc. I know NOTHING about how to do this manually so is there either a way to uninstall the anti-virus part of the programme and run the One Button Check Up as a stand alone alongside whichever new anti virus prog I choose or is there and alternative programme that I could run that would work in the same way?

Thanks in advance:beer:

  • I think you will have to uninstall everything. I use NOD32 now and my PC runs so much quicker now i got rid of Norton.

Depending on your version, you could probably install NSW only without NAV (I've done it in the past with the 2003 version), but like the others mention, I don't think it's really worth it.

There are free (non-bloat) programs that will do the same & more*, like the excellent CCleaner. G

*Than the One Button Check Up anyway. I found the One Button Check Up far from perfect when I did a little digging some years ago

Yes you can keep it, just go to Add/Remove programs, select Norton SystemWorks & click on 'change', then 'modify' - left click on the antivirus section & choose 'will be unavailable' - you should end up with a cross there & a tick in the rest of the programs. I like One-button checkup as well, purely because you can set it to automatically check things.
  • just get rid of it!! norton is bad bad bad bad bad. did i say it was bad?!?!?! useless. we can talkmu through on here on how to do a backup manually using windows.

    use antivir!!! much better!!!

Things like CCleaner will do a similar job to "OneButton Checkup". CCleaner is free and regularly updated, it comes with a registry cleaner and file cleaner for stuff like cookies etc - which is what "OneButton Checkup" does anyway.

Ditch Norton and get something like Kaspersky (which I use) or NOD32 then download yourself a copy of CCleaner and run that periodically.
