Finances after separation
Hi,
This is still very raw for me, but I am looking for advice about finances for a single parent. My husband of 23 years left me yesterday (for someone 20 years younger), and I am left in a muddle. I currently work 6 night shifts a week, but I have a 12 yr old DD, so obviously cannot leave her alone. I have searched the web, and called a couple of benefit 'helplines', but cannot seem to find a straight answer. What, if any, benefits would I qualify for? I could in the short term work maybe 20 hrs a week, and my DD would stay at my dads, but this would not work when she goes back to school. Luckily I will be starting a new job in September, if I can get the shifts to work out, but I now have 6 weeks very little or very limited income.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are currently claiming tax credits as a couple you need to call and close the claim and open a new single claim - as a single parent you should receive working tax credits as long as you work over 16 hours per week
If you rent, possibly housing benefit
council tax single person discount
try one of the benefit calculators like entitledto
also child maintenance for your daughter will not affect any benefits0
