Tax Credits Overpayment

I have just completed my tax credits renewal and I have been sent a letter by HMRC to say I had been overpaid £870.00 last year. they have already set up a re-payment arrangement at £40 per week, which I cannot currently afford.
Am I obliged to pay this back through their error, and if so can I re-arrange my re-payment options to make them more affordable for me. Because of this over payment I'm currently receiving no help towards my childcare costs which are £600 per month.
Where do I stand with this?

What is the reason for the overpayment? what income was your 14/15 award based on and what was your actual income?SummerBreeze wrote: »I have just completed my tax credits renewal and I have been sent a letter by HMRC to say I had been overpaid £870.00 last year. they have already set up a re-payment arrangement at £40 per week, which I cannot currently afford.

Did you advise them of any changes during the year and receive an amended award?0 -
We had a overpayment of £750 and they have arranged a payment plan over 2 years.0

If it ever got to the point where i have no money to eat. I would go to the police station and break something to get myself arrested. Atleast i would get a warm cell and food and if everyone who get SANCTIONED by the job center did that than the government would have to change there policy about sanctioning so many people on the work program.0

I had a load of trouble with an overpayment due to the HMRC staff not inputting the correct details. When I received my award notice, I thought it wasnt right so I phoned them to double check and they said 'yes, it is correct' so I used the money I had been awarded (a £400 +back pay payment plus a payment of just under £200) to pay off an overdraft, The week later I recievd a letter saying that I wasnt entiiteld to the money and they wanted it back! I couldnt get to speak to anyone with a clue when I pjoned up about it so i got my MP involved - MPs seem to have a hotline to the top! Anyway they said I still have to pay it back even though it was their error. I didnt think to appeal or dispute it as they had told my MP they cant write it off. Theyve said it will be taken from my next claim but I wont be claiming again as my hours at work are too low.
Sorry to go on, lol....email your MP, mine (or should I say his secretary ) was very helpful0 -
I've just had a letter saying that i've been overpaid by £700 and I've to pay it back. I'm really angry about it. I gave them all the correct information and always informed them of any changes in circumstances. So, i don't understand how they can so badly miscalculate how much they've been paying me. Now, suddenly out of the blue i've got a bill for £700! It's really out of order.0

Crikey, I know so many people who have been clobbered by the useless tax credits system. I reckon every living breathing soul in the country knows someone who has been screwed by the incompetence of tax credits!

I hope you get it sorted OP, but I wouldn't count on it. My friend took 3 years to get back £999 they owed her! If she had owed it them, they would have immediately altered her award to get the money back as quickly as possible.
Another friend of mine said that she is never going to apply again after last year. She gave her income the year before, and the following year was a bit more (only 1.5K more or so,) and she seemed, somehow, to owe them about £1600! So they reduced her allowance to the amount it should be, and then reduced it even more to get the money back that she owed!
Waste of space they are!
Ridiculous!cooeeeeeeeee :j :wave:0
