My son is 16, will be 17 the end of August, he will start an apprenticeship on Monday earning £150 a week. He has a Natwest Adapt account just now, but should he open a 'adult' account? and if so, which is the best.

Define 'the best'.
I see that 'Adapt' comes with a debit card. What sort of card is it? I don't see Visa/Mastercard logo on it that implies that it's not a full-scale debit card.0 -
he does have a debit card now, it can be used anywhere as far as I know, he has never had problems in shops, fast food, cash machines, I asked about an adult account as the adapt account cannot have direct debits etc, which at the moment is fine, it also is a under 19 account, so will need to think about an account then.
Are 16 year olds allowed adult accounts, I'm not even sure. Just thought it might be best to get an account he can use long term without having to change I 18 months or so.0 -

There are some for 16-19 yr olds, all allowing direct debits. Looks like Lloyds/TSB would be a good option.0 -
PS. I think he can open a regular bank account but you'd need to act as a guarantor because he's under 18.0

Under 18s cannot open adult current accounts in the UK. That's why there are Youth accounts (some of which can morph into a current account on reaching or completing your 18th year).0 -
Sorry by regular I meant one with debit card and direct debits etc. Like the Lloyds one or this Barclays one... but looks like the 16-19 ones can be open without a parent. Mea culpa

My youth account when I was younger automatically got changed into an adult basic account when I turned 18. So there's no need to neceassarily change accounts when he turns 18. I opened a second account when I was 18 - a student account, but still kept my old account.0
