A VPN is a virtual private network, the whole connection between you and the other end of the connection is opaque to outside spying or interference. There are some free ones but BE AWARE that installing unknown software from unknown companies specifically to encrypt information is risky in itself.
Recent technical press reports have shown that many popular VPN tools like browser extensions are in fact in turn making you somebody else's exit node (using your data allowance), and that's assuming they aren't actively tampering with your traffic. As such, use a paid, reputable VPN if you want to go down that route and your security and privacy are a concern.
ETA: A VPN doesn't solve the trust problem, it moves it.0
