I would definitely recommend you getting your protein from food sources such as chicken, turkey, eggs and greek yoghurt. Lidl's do 1kg tubs for about £1.39.

As for powders, I can barely stomach them. I found MYPROTEIN whey in strawberry to be about the only one I can handle. They also do a lot of promos so worth having a bash
  • You raise some very valid points. In order to avoid artificial sweeteners etc we would strongly suggest opting for a brand like Pulsin. Pulsin is an organic brand, priding themselves on their grass fed whey protein, 100% vegetarian AND delivering one of the highest protein counts on the market (90% whey isolate).

The product I refer to is Pulsin Whey Protein Isolate >>> http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/pulsin-whey-protein-isolate-1kg

Due to Pulsin’s natural composition, the protein is unflavoured, making it free from artificial sweeteners and other preservatives.

Cost per gram, NOTHING rivals whey protein shakes. You would have to consume a LOT of food to get the equivalent amino acid profile and total grams per serving. Our suggestion would be to opt for eggs, tuna, and of course lean meats including chicken, turkey, white fish and beef. Alternatively you could bolster your protein intake via beans, peas, pulses which also increase fibre, in turn supporting fat loss.

An ideal routine would be a protein and starchy carb source in morning, a protein smoothie shake (with berries etc) mid-morning, and starchy carb, protein and veg meal for lunch, a mid-afternoon snack (Pulsin Protein Snack Bar >>> http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/pulsin-protein-snack-bar-18-x-50g-bar-s ). Your evening meal might consist of another lean protein source, starchy carb, mixed veg, followed by a final Pulsin Whey Protein Isolate shake 1 -2 hours before bed.

Myprotein is the most popular when it comes to cheap protein powder, but try other sites also as there are always offers. Bulkpowders, Bodybuilding Warehouse, etc are all sites that many use.

If you're strapped for cash don't bother with Optimum Nutrition protein. It's too expensive.

Don't just rely on protein powder. Many people think it's a magic bullet when it's not. Eat real food.

    Cheap ways to get protein:

Eggs (THE CHEAPEST OPTION - 15 for £1 at Aldi) - with protein powder you can make protein pancakes.
Chicken (at my local market i can get 5kg of chicken for around £20-25)
Lentils (often dismissed, but they have a decent amount of protein)
    Tuna (dirt cheap)
Beef mince (i wouldn't go too cheap, but decent mince isn't too expensive)
Turkey mince (some hate it but i love it. Leaner than beef mince and sometimes it's cheaper)

Also check out the discount aisles.
Oats - great for post workout
  • This stuff looks awesome thank you very much for the recommendation!

I did find Optimum Gold in my research but as you say the cost is very expensive.

The Gold Standard Whey is a mix of whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate - Isolate is the most expensive form of protein due to that fact that more fat is filtered out.

Typically the actual protein percentage of a whey isolate is 90% and this will make the Gold Standard Whey more expensive as well as the power of the brand, the Protein Works is a pure WPC so that is an 80% protein product, cheaper to manufacture but still good.

Gold Standard will be a mix of WPC at 80% and WPI at 90%

Both are excellent products as is MyProtein Impact Whey which is also a WPC 80%.
Do you have a fitness blog? Would you like free 'branded' sports nutrition products to review? If so then PM me for details...
  • For protein powder price to protein % content myprotein cannot be beat. 5kg for £42
Check out a website called labdoor.com
Independent lab that has tested many protein powders many of the branded expensive ones contain no were near the amount of protein listed. My protein comes out near the top for value and actual protein content to the label.

Food - buy eggs in bulk
Chicken google bm meat wholesale 5kg fresh fillets for £18 - and they are miles
Bigger than the supermarket ones full of water.
  • If you do stick with the shakes, I'd definitely recommend sourcing them-from eBay, perhaps with a price watch on so as to make the most of hte best deal. It's the type of thing where if you look hard enough, there;s always something highly discounted or on offer.

    Hope this helps.

Bio-availability is also important, and frankly 'food' is the best way to get not just protein but the balance of nutrients the body needs.

If you're terrified of fat (and remember the body actually needs some), skimmed milk has the same protein as regular, it's the fat that is removed. A pint of semi-skimmed is about 18g pure protein. That's about the same as a pack of top quality Beef Jerky/Biltong, and a fraction of the price. You can also get Skimmed Milk Powder very cheaply, it even has more caesin than whey protein, so feeds your system slower (whey protein is all processed after about 4 hours, so creates a spike, caesin is slower, more sustained nutrition).

    Myprotein. Cheap and cheerful.
Almond milk, some fruit, scoop of protein and spinach in a smoothy.

Works a treat. Can't taste the spinach by the way.

Throw spinach in whatever you eat. Health benefits are amazing.
